Day 26: Z-Day

Day 27: Z-Day Zeitgeist

Nope! I’m not quitting my blog. Fooled ya!

On Day Zee (which is the official spelling for the 26th letter of the Roman alphabet), I bid this challenge a fond farewell. It was, well, a challenge. Some days the entries came easy to me, and others they were like pulling teeth. I’m sure it’s obvious which is which just from reading the entries.

I was sidelined by a death, an outrage, and an illness, but I made it to the last day, and I am actually crazy enough that I think I’ll do it again next year. Until then, regular MWF blogging will resume this Friday. Check this space!

Days 24 & 25: XM and YSL

Days 24 & 25: XM Radio and YSL Babydoll Kiss & Blush

I’ve always been one to listen to my iPod (and before that, CDs) in favor of the radio. Classic rock stations play a lot of bad music in between the awesome songs. Newer stations… are a lot worse. I don’t loathe all new music, but there does seem to be a whole lot of crap being produced these days. To each their own and all that, but bubblegum pop is just not my thing.

Then I discovered XM Radio, which is basically the best invention since sliced bread. Some artists even have their own channels, something I think is so cool. I’m guilty of jamming to more than my fair share of 80s music.

And speaking of the 80s, I don’t always get excited by new makeup releases. A lot of them sound like the same old, same old. The newly released YSL Babydoll Kiss & Blush collection, on the other hand, has my attention. Some of the shades are so deliciously 80s, but with a modern finish. I’m going to have to check them out.

Days 22 & 23: A Victory, a Virus, Wicked Fun, and a Wanker

Days 22 & 23: Victory, Viruses, and Wicked Fun

We have the internet! At long last, victory is ours! I also have some kind of virus which I initially mistook for a bad case of allergies. I should be so lucky.

Last night I went to see Kansas with my uncle, which was a whole lot of fun. (I’m calling it Wicked Fun to fulfill the W requirement. See how sneaky I am?) It was awesome to see Kansas in concert since I was too young to go see them when they were touring during their heyday, and then they sort-of-kind-of split up. Not totally sure what happened there, but they’re back, and they’re awesome. The band opening for them was called Acoustic Crossroads, and they were really good, too. I'll upload footage I took to YouTube in the next few days so everyone can hear their cover of Wish You Were Here.

You know what? I can fill the W requirement with another word! Wanker. Some wanker spilled his beer all over me… but he also spilled it on himself, so he was every bit as miserable as I was. Ha!

Days 19-21: Sadness, Tonsil Woes, and UV Uh Ohs

Days 19-21: Sadness, Tonsil Woes, and UV Uh Ohs

The internet has been down since Monday, and if that’s not reason enough to miss a few days in the challenge, the wife of one of my family’s oldest friends passed away, so we went to attend the wake. Death is never easy to begin with, and hers was unexpected to boot.

In other news, I have Spring Sickness. I’m one of those annoying gals people hate because I start to grumble in protest when spring rolls around. I wouldn’t mind it so much if I didn’t stay sick. Pollen is evil. Wasps are evil. My tonsils are evil. Spring is evil.

And, lastly, when I staggered into the bathroom to brush my teeth, bleary-eyed from sneezing nonstop… I almost used my sunscreen as toothpaste. They’re both in red tubes, and I made the grave mistake of leaving them side by side after a bathroom cleaning spree. That would have been disgusting, not to mention a total waste of sunscreen.

Day 18: Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Internet

Day 18: Rage

So... another post from my phone. This time because I have no internet.  It's the most frustrating thing in the world when you work online, and the companies don't seem to understand no internet = no money.

Hopefully tomorrow's post will be brought to you by my computer, but who knows?

Day 17: Quick Fangirl Moment

Day 17: Queen Latifah

I have loved Queen Latifah from the first time I saw her on an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air. She’s funny, talented, smart, and gorgeous. Anyone who doesn’t believe me just needs to watch the following video and enjoy.

You’re welcome.

Day 16: Primer, Perfected

Day 16: Primer, Perfected

I have the oiliest eyelids in the world. Even when my face is dry and flaky, my lids are shiny enough to attract a BP drilling crew. I figured MAC’s Paint Pot or the Milani primer were as good as it could get for me. Shadows last about eight hours without fading, but they crease within five. Considering Urban Decay’s Primer Potion lasts three hours on me, I was willing to accept that I would always look somewhat sloppy after five hours.

Then I got a sample of the NARS Pro-Prime with a Sephora order, and it solved my problem completely. I applied my makeup at 9:30 in the morning, and by the time I was ready to go to bed at 2:30 am, my eyeshadow had not budged. It had not creased. It was flawless. My face, on the other hand… ahem.

But I digress. NARS Pro-Prime is the most wonderful product I have ever tried. It does exactly what it’s supposed to and has changed my makeup routine completely.

Day 15: Opinions on Ombré

Day 15: Ombré

I think I’m going to start a feature called Unpopular Opinion Time because there are quite a few things that everyone has/loves/wants that I just… don’t like. Ombré hair is one of them.

To me, ombré hair doesn’t look edgy, cool, beachy, hip, boho, or sophisticated, all words I have heard used to describe the trend. Anyone who has ever bleached their hair and then gone over it with a darker color knows that the bleached ends fade, leaving a two-tone effect. That’s what it makes me think of.

I’m sure there are plenty of women who hate my hair. That’s fine. They may hate bangs, think short hair is stupid, always think of Carrot Top when they see red hair, whatever. It’s just my opinion. We’re all entitled to them. Not liking someone’s hair color does not mean I think they are a horrible person, are ugly, or have no style. Plenty of extremely stylish women jumped on the bandwagon. I just think it’s time for the trend to go away now. It’s time for something fresh.

Day 14: Nike

Day 14: Nike Nerd

The first pair of shoes I ever bought with my own money were made by Nike. Whenever I’m in need for sneakers I know will fit my weirdly small, arthritic feet, I know I can always trust them to work for me. My latest pair arrived today, and they are beautiful!

Day 13: Madewell

Day 13: Madewell

There are so many things I considered writing about when I got to the letter M, but after a friend linked me to an adorable messenger bag she’d picked up in the Madewell sale, I decided I had to share. They have some really cute new offerings online right now, but there’s a ton of cool weather clothes on sale if anyone wants to pre-buy for next autumn/winter.

Day 12: Lovin' La Roche-Posay

Day 12: La Roche-Posay

It’s, ahem, that time again. Ladies, you know what I mean. As if being moody, constantly exhausted, and in pain didn’t already suck enough, I’ve broken out all over my chin.

Effaclar Duo to the rescue!

I seriously have no idea how my skin survived Evil Time without it, but it won’t have to again because I repurchase it the day I notice I’m about to run out, and if I ever hear mutterings that it will be discontinued, well, I’ll just buy them out and hope they don’t expire before I hit menopause.

Day 11: Kale Craze

Day 11: Kale

I love what my uncle terms “nasty hippie shit.” Kale, tofu, tempeh, you name it, and I love it. Today I snacked on kale chips in between two meals consisting of nothing but fish and vegetables, because some days you just need to eat healthfully. (I also had a beer, so if anyone is wondering if I’ve been replaced by an android, you can stop now).

While grocery shopping today, I saw a huge mountain of kale and realized I have no idea how to prepare it myself. This must change. I’ve done some Googling, and I have to try the kale, fig, and halloumi salad recipe I found on The Shiksa! Do you have any kale receipes?

Day 10: Jerks

Day 10: Jerks

Okay, so I’m playing fast and loose with the rules today, but I didn’t want anyone else to get burned in the time it took me to reach the letter U, and the people at Univox Community are definitely a bunch of jerks.

They’ve owed me a $25 Amazon card for the past two months. Once you redeem your points, you’re supposed to receive your card with two weeks. Two weeks passed, no card. I e-mailed them. Another two and a half weeks went by with no response, and then I received an e-mail saying they were sorry, and my card would be there shortly.

I never got the card.

I have since e-mailed again, tweeted at them, and done everything short of turning up at their home office and refusing to leave without payment, because it isn’t about the money anymore. It’s about the principle of the thing. It’s about the fact that if you contact someone repeatedly without hearing back from them, and they never fix their mistake, people should know about it.

So there you go. Never sign up for Univox Community, and if I’ve ever recommended it to you in the past, I’m very sorry.

Day 9: Instagram

Day 9: Instagram

In case it’s escaped anyone’s notice, I’m kind of obsessed with Instagram. I love photography and considered a career in it for a long time before I realized I would have to spend most of my time photographing babies and small children. Not my cup of tea.

I’m obsessed with taking pictures of my cats, places I visit, yummy things I get to eat, and new makeup I’m trying. I’m also fond of comedic shots, like a giant, blow-up crawfish in the supermarket. If any of those things strike your fancy, come on over and follow me

Day 8: H Is For High

Day 8: Hi, Gwen! (Or, More Appropriately, High Gwen!)

Jackson, MS lost its mayor, Chokwe Lumumba, to heart failure on February 25, 2014. He believed in stimulating Jackson’s economy with infrastructure developments and was an adamant supporter of equal pay for women. His son, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, will runoff against City Councilman Tony Yarber on April 22.

And then… there’s the bullet we dodged.

Everybody, meet Gwendolyn Chapman. She ran for mayor, too. Her platform? Legalize marijuana because the fumes will protect us from nuclear fallout. I’m not even kidding. Watch!

Day 7: Gaga for Gap

Day 7: Gap

Flashback to my teenage years, and I was a hefty, pimple-faced goth with dyed black hair and a seriously bitchy attitude. Because I couldn’t wear anything cute, I lashed out at everything cute. As a result, all I wore were — gulp, this is embarrassing — black parachute pants and black t-shirts. Anything cute or girly was rejected.

Boy, is my family glad that period is over. I still wear a lot of black because I genuinely like it, but I’m not “offended” by things that are pretty anymore. Case in point? This adorable, floral moto jacket. The boyish style and zippered details keep it from being too precious, but the pattern is just sweet

A-Z Day 6: Fevered Foolishness

Day 6: Fever

I am sick as all get out right now. I caught some monster bug while on vacation, and now I need a vacation from my vacation. It’s one of those Jack Of All Trades viruses with a stomach component, flu-like symptoms, and my least favorite, fever.

But I will not be sidelined! I will finish this freakin’ challenge if it kills me. Whine-free posts will resume tomorrow.

A-Z Day 5: Ellie

Day 5: Ellie

This is my sweet, wonderful baby girl. Her nickname is Teeny, but her real name is Ellie Satler (after Laura Dern’s character in Jurassic Park), and she is my heart and soul. I realize I sound like a deranged cat mom because I totally am, but as much as I hated that my vacation came to an end today, I was so happy to see my little baby that I soon forgot about the lure of the beach.

A-Z Day 4: Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't

Day 4: Davis, Jefferson

While visiting Biloxi, my mom and I decided to drag my dad to see Beauvoir, the last home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. As someone who has always been embarrassed I was born in Mississippi because of the south’s role in slavery and the Civil War, I wasn’t exactly gung-ho about visiting because of Davis’ ties to the home but rather because it’s gorgeous

However, I learned things I either didn’t know before or had long forgotten. Davis himself was against the war and accepted his appointment as president out of a sense of duty. After the war ended and he’d spent years in prison, wearing shackles even in his cell, one of the men who arrested him went to him for money because he couldn’t afford to reach his home up north. Davis gave his former arresting officer the money and told him that if he should see any southerners in a similar situation, he should help him if he was able.

I will always be horrified by slavery (and thrilled that my ancestors didn’t even live in the south at the time), but I don’t hate Jefferson Davis anymore.

A-Z Day 3: Crazy About Caleb

Day 3: Caleb Johnson

I’ll admit I was a bit confused about what I was going to post for my third entry, but then Angel linked me to an American Idol contestant’s video, and I knew there could be no other entry for me today.

Caleb Johnson deserves to win this season. His performances are consistently professional, and he has that rock star swagger that commands attention. How this guy doesn’t already have a record deal is a mystery to me.

All of his covers are amazing, but my favorite has to be Skyfall. Check it out!

A-Z Day 2: Biloxi Bound

Day 2: Biloxi, MS

Because I’m sick and can’t sleep now, I thought I’d tackle my next entry. It has nothing to do with the fact that I’ll probably pass out the second I get into my room, I swear.

For the next few days, I’ll be posting from Biloxi, MS!

I haven’t been to the beach in awhile, and I’m hoping the salty air (and fresh seafood) will help me recover from the sinus infection that is currently kicking my ass. It’s been years since I’ve been to Biloxi, before Katrina hit, and I’m looking forward to seeing it again.

A-Z Day 1: In Defense of Angelina

For the month of April, I’ll be taking a break from my MWF schedule of posting in order to participate in the A-Z Challenge! Stay tuned for a variety of posts, all starting with the letter of the day.

Day 1: Angelina Jolie

I am sick to death of body-shaming. Either someone is too thin or too fat. Angelina Jolie has been subjected to utter vitriol about her weight for years. In the words of Sherlock Holmes, “Do your research!”

Angelina has been skinny much more often than she has been voluptuous. She has tiny arms and legs and carries her weight in her torso. That's still true today. Case in point, Angelina in 1999.

Angelina more recently.

You see my point? So stop calling Adele fat. Stop calling Angelina emaciated. Allow people to exist in their natural shape. Learn to see beauty in diversity. Adele and Angelina have, and they’re happier for it. The same cannot be said for the naysayers.
